Student Training Allowance

Official Guidelines Updated: March 2026

Key Facts for 2025–2026:

The Student Training Allowance is a non-repayable grant paid biweekly, primarily for students attending Yukon University. Amounts scale by family size — from $134/week (no dependants) up to $281/week (4+ dependants). If you have dependants and are attending Yukon University, this may provide more support than the Yukon Grant. You cannot receive both at the same time.

The Student Training Allowance is a non-repayable territorial grant that provides weekly living support to eligible Yukon residents studying full-time, primarily at Yukon University. Unlike the Yukon Grant (which is a flat $185/week regardless of family situation), the Student Training Allowance scales with the number of dependants in your household — making it potentially more valuable for students supporting a family.

Funding is paid biweekly, and you must confirm your attendance every two weeks to continue receiving payments. You share a combined 170-week lifetime limit with the Yukon Grant.

Weekly Amounts by Family Size

Family Situation Weekly Amount
Student with no dependants $134 / week
Student and 1 dependant $195 / week
Student and 2 dependants $227 / week
Student and 3 dependants $257 / week
Student and 4 or more dependants $281 / week
Additional weekly amount — maintaining two residences (Whitehorse + home community) +$105 / week

A dependant is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who mostly lives with you and can be a child aged 17 or younger, or another qualifying dependent person.

Travel Allowance

If you live outside of Whitehorse, you may be eligible for an additional weekly amount and a travel allowance to help cover the cost of travelling to Whitehorse or to your institution. Contact Student Financial Assistance at studentfinancialassistance@yukon.ca for details on travel allowance amounts specific to your community.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Student Training Allowance, you must:

  • Be a Yukon resident — generally meaning you have lived in the Yukon for the two years immediately before your classes start and file taxes as a Yukon resident, hold Yukon health care insurance, or hold a valid Yukon driver’s licence.
  • Not be eligible for student financial assistance from another province, territory, or country.
  • Not be receiving other funding for living expenses alongside the Student Training Allowance. (Other funding for tuition, books, or childcare can be combined, but not living expense funding from another source.)
  • Be enrolled in a full-time program at a designated institution.

Important — Attendance Confirmation Required:

Your Student Financial Assistance officer will contact you every two weeks to confirm you are still studying full-time. You must reply to confirm your attendance to receive funding for the next two weeks. Missing a confirmation will pause your payments.

Yukon Grant vs. Student Training Allowance — Which to Choose?

You cannot receive both programs at the same time. Consider the following when deciding:

  • The Student Training Allowance may be a better fit if you have one or more dependants and are attending Yukon University — the per-week amounts are higher at 2+ dependants than the flat Yukon Grant rate.
  • The Yukon Grant ($185/week) may be better if you have no dependants or are attending a post-secondary institution outside Yukon.
  • Both programs count toward the same 170-week lifetime limit. If you use 68 weeks of the Student Training Allowance, for example, you have 102 weeks remaining for either program.
  • If you are eligible for the Yukon Grant, you may access up to an additional 68 weeks of Student Training Allowance specifically for full-time upgrading courses.

How to Apply

Apply through the Student Financial Assistance online portal using your MyYukon account at student-aid.service.yukon.ca. Submit your application along with a Program Information Form completed by an authorized representative at your institution. If the institution representative is delayed, submit the application first and upload the form once it is complete. Before payments begin, Yukon University will send an email to your YukonU email address with sign-in instructions for the attendance confirmation process.
