Medical terminology is language used to precisely describe the human body including its components, processes, conditions affecting it, and procedures performed upon it. Medical terminology is used in the field of medicine.

Medical terminology is used in the field of medicine. The Medical terminology course will help students in developing the language required to communicate effectively in a medical setting. Word structure, diagnostic procedures and pharmacology as well as common medical terminology related to the body systems will also be taught.

What does basic medical terminology include?

  • Abbreviations for medical and pharmacological terms, such as ECG, FBC or b.d. (In case you’re wondering, FBC is ‘full blood count’).
  • Understanding the functions of the body
  • Common illnesses, injuries and diseases – including health topics and terms used to describe onset or nature of disease
  • Health insurance terminology
  • Understanding medical training, medical specialties and fields
  • Names of hospital departments
  • Medical equipment and instruments
  • Medical investigations and procedures
  • Medications

Graduates may find employment in a variety of care settings including:

• Business Clerk – almost all departments in a hospital have a Business Clerk (front line)
• Booking Clerk – to book surgeries, procedures, etc.
• Scheduler
• Different Administrative Assistant jobs
• Program Assistant
• Medical Secretary – usually this is for a Surgeon or Physician’s office
• Ward Clerk
