Heavy Duty Equipment Technician

The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET) apprenticeship program (formerly Heavy Duty Mechanic) requires time spent on the job and in-school training. A Heavy Duty Equipment Technician trainee must complete a four-year program including workplace and in-school hours of training as follows:

• Technical Training: 4 levels, 840 hours Registration in the following levels of training at BCIT: 
  • Level 1, 2, 3 Heavy Mechanical Trades (HMT)
  • Level 4 Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET)
• Work based training: 6,360 hours

After completion of training, a passing grade on the interprovincial exam will result in the ITA Certificate of Qualification (Heavy Duty Equipment Technician), Certificate of Apprenticeship and the Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement.

The program

Students work on mechanical and electronic components of off-highway equipment. This includes most equipment systems such as fuel, brakes, steering, suspension, tracks, under-carriage, hydraulics, transmission, emission control and exhaust, engines, electrical, cooling and air conditioning. Heavy Mechanical Trades Apprenticeship (HMT) Levels 1, 2 and 3 are common core for the following programs:

• Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET): Level 1, 2, 3
• Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM): Level 1, 2, 3
• Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM): Levels 1, 2
• Transport Trailer Technician (TTT): Level 1
