Yukon Grant

Official Guidelines Updated: March 2026

Key Facts for 2025–2026:

The Yukon Grant provides $185 per week of study in 2025–26, paid as a lump sum each term. You can receive up to 170 weeks of funding in your lifetime (shared with the Student Training Allowance). A travel allowance of up to $1,500 per year is also available for eligible students. You cannot receive the Yukon Grant and the Student Training Allowance at the same time.

The Yukon Grant is a non-repayable territorial grant for Yukon residents pursuing full-time post-secondary studies. Unlike loans, it does not need to be repaid. It is the primary form of territorial student financial assistance for students studying at institutions across Canada, including at graduate level.

The grant may be combined with other student aid, including federal Canada Student Loans and Grants, but cannot be received at the same time as the Student Training Allowance.

Grant Amount and Travel Allowance

Component Amount (2025–26) Notes
Weekly grant $185 per week of study Paid as a lump sum each term
Travel allowance — Whitehorse residents $1,500 per year For students going to school outside the territory
Travel allowance — community residents $1,500 + additional community amount For residents travelling from a Yukon community to Whitehorse or outside the territory
Lifetime maximum Up to 170 weeks total Combined with any weeks used under the Student Training Allowance

The travel allowance is automatically assessed when you apply — you do not need to apply separately. It is usually included with your first grant payment. To remain eligible for the travel allowance the following year, you must return to the Yukon at least once within the 12-month period after receiving it. You can only receive the travel allowance once per 12 months.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Yukon Grant, you must generally:

  • Be a Yukon resident. You are generally considered a resident if you file taxes as a Yukon resident, maintain Yukon health care insurance, or hold a valid Yukon driver’s licence. You must have lived in the Yukon for the two years immediately before your classes start.
  • Be not eligible for student financial assistance from another province, territory, or country. This may happen if you, a parent, or another supporting person resided outside the Yukon for 12 months or longer.
  • Be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program at a designated institution. Graduate and doctoral (Master’s and PhD) programs are eligible.
  • For dependent students: your family must have maintained a Yukon family home for at least 12 months.

If you have been away from Yukon for more than 4 months without being enrolled in full-time studies during the 2 years before your classes start, you must provide evidence of continued residency — such as Yukon tax filings, health care insurance, or a driver’s licence.

Yukon Grant vs. Student Training Allowance:

You cannot receive both the Yukon Grant and the Student Training Allowance at the same time. If you have one or more dependants and are attending Yukon University, the Student Training Allowance may provide more (its amounts scale with family size). Consider both options before applying. The 170-week lifetime limit is shared between the two programs.

How to Apply

Apply through the Student Financial Assistance online portal using your MyYukon account at student-aid.service.yukon.ca. Apply within 6 weeks of the start of your studies. You must apply each academic year — funding is not automatically renewed. If your post-secondary institution representative is delayed in completing the Program Information Form, submit your application before the deadline first and upload the form once it is ready.

An academic year runs from August 1 to July 31. Payments cannot be issued after the end date of your funding term, so submit all documents well before your term ends. Applications are processed first-come, first-served.

Other Financial Aid Options

The Yukon Grant can be combined with Canada Student Grants. If you are studying at Yukon University (particularly with dependants), the Student Training Allowance may be better suited to your situation. Sector-specific bursaries are also available for health care, nursing, and early childhood education programs.
