About the Program

The Medical Office Assistant diploma program prepares you for administrative and clinical support roles in healthcare settings while earning your Certified Medical Assisting Professional (CMAP) designation. In 48 weeks, you'll master medical office procedures, clinical skills, and complete a clinical placement at an approved healthcare facility to work in physicians' offices, clinics, hospitals, and various healthcare environments across Manitoba.

This comprehensive program provides employment-ready, comprehensively trained graduates fully qualified to work in hands-on administrative and clinical support capacity in the medical industry. Academy of Learning provides financial aid guidance for qualified students and job placement assistance to help you succeed from enrollment through employment. You'll participate in lectures covering medical office reception, patient registration and scheduling, aseptic concepts and infection control, vital signs, clinical assistance, electrocardiography principles, WHMIS workplace safety, and understanding of EHR and EMR systems—plus gain First Aid and CPR Level C certification essential for Manitoba healthcare settings.

Comprehensive Clinical Training

Master both administrative and clinical competencies including patient registration, medical transcription, billing and collection procedures, coding and claims processing, aseptic concepts, vital signs, electrocardiography, and clinical laboratory requisitions—preparing you for diverse healthcare roles in Manitoba.

What You'll Learn

  • Medical administrative and clinical foundations - Introduction to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology Parts 1 and 2, medical office procedures, introduction to medical transcription, clinical procedures, patient filing methods, billing and collection procedures, coding and claims processing, plus understanding of EHR and EMR systems
  • Clinical competencies and safety - Aseptic concepts and infection control, vital signs monitoring, First Aid and CPR Level C certification, clinical assistance with exam room preparation, electrocardiography principles, WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), clinical laboratory divisions and requisitions, and N-95 mask fit testing
  • Microsoft Office and business skills - Introduction to keyboarding, keyboard skill building Levels 1 and 2, Windows Level 1, Microsoft Word Levels 1-3, Excel Level 1, Access Level 1, Outlook Level 1, Basic Bookkeeping Level 1, plus strategies for success
  • Clinical placement and Manitoba locations - Hands-on worksite externship clinical placement at an approved healthcare facility plus comprehensive job search and résumé writing, available at 2 Manitoba campus locations: Winnipeg North and Winnipeg South
