About the Program

The Medical Office Assistant diploma program prepares you for administrative and clinical support roles in healthcare settings while earning your Certified Medical Assisting Professional (CMAP) designation. In 47 weeks, you'll master medical office procedures, clinical skills, and complete a clinical placement to work in physicians' offices, clinics, hospitals, and diverse healthcare environments across Alberta.

This comprehensive program combines medical administrative knowledge with hands-on clinical competencies, preparing you to provide both front-office support and clinical assistance in healthcare settings. Academy of Learning provides financial aid guidance for qualified students and job placement assistance to help you succeed from enrollment through employment. You'll gain proficiency in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical transcription, and clinical procedures while developing the Microsoft Office skills and Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification essential for modern medical environments.

Earn Your CMAP Designation

Graduate eligible to achieve the Certified Medical Assisting Professional (CMAP) designation, demonstrating you're fully qualified to work in hands-on administrative and clinical support capacity across the medical industry in Alberta.

What You'll Learn

  • Medical administrative foundations - Introduction to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology Parts 1 and 2, introduction to medical transcription, medical office procedures, patient care protocols, and comprehensive understanding of Alberta's healthcare delivery systems
  • Clinical competencies - Clinical procedures, Standard First Aid and Basic Rescue (Level C) CPR certification, aseptic techniques, vital signs monitoring, exam room preparation, and hands-on patient care skills for diverse medical settings
  • Microsoft Office and keyboarding proficiency - Windows Level 1, Microsoft Word Levels 1-3, Excel Level 1, Access Level 1, Outlook Level 1, keyboarding skill building to 40 WPM, Basic Bookkeeping Level 1, and thought patterns for a successful career
  • Clinical placement and Alberta access - Hands-on clinical placement/practicum at an approved healthcare facility plus comprehensive job search and résumé writing, available at 6 Alberta campus locations: Calgary Central, Calgary Genesis Centre, Edmonton South, Edmonton West, Medicine Hat, and Red Deer
