  • DUTIES OF A PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER

    A Personal Support Worker provides support to people who need assistance in daily needs because of injury, illness or aging. PSW’s give patients important social and emotional support and also provide vital information on patient conditions to nurses, doctors, and other medical staff. You will provide assistance to patients with daily living tasks, help in day-to-day activities such as making bed, cleaning and washing. Most PSW’s agree that it is one of the most rewarding challenges that a person in the healthcare industry can undertake.

    PROGRAM OUTLINE

    Students will complete 390 hours of in-school theory. You will also have hands on experience, using their knowledge from the theory and skills learned in the classroom. A clinical instructor will be with the students for 200 hours of supervised clinical placement in both a long term care facility and a community facility. Students must then complete 110 hours of unsupervised clinical placement in both a long term care facility and community facility.

    COURSE PREREQUISITE

    • Gr.12 OSSD or Mature Student Status
    • Successful completion of entrance evaluation
    • Medical (before the externship begins)
    • Clear Police Check
    • English Proficiency

  • Personal Support Worker Bridging

    PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER BRIDGING

    This 4 months program is for individuals who are internationally educated nurses and healthcare workers who want to transition into the Canadian workforce. It could also be suitable for previous Canadian-educated nurses, health care aides, or PSWs who want a refresher before coming back to work in the field. This is perfect for Internationally Trained Nurses who want to accelerate their applications whether they plan to apply as an RPN or RN in Canada.

    PROGRAM OUTLINE

    The student will complete 195 hours of in-school theory. You will also have hands on experience, using their knowledge from the theory and skills learned in the classroom. A clinical instructor will be with the students for 50 hours of supervised clinical placement in both a long term care facility and a community facility. Students must then complete 105 hours of unsupervised clinical placement in both a long term care facility and community facility.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    • International Certificate and/or Diploma and/or Degree
    • Transcripts from all Adult Education Institutions
    • Gr.12 OSSD or Mature Student Status
    • Successful completion of entrance evaluation
    • Medical Certificate (before the externship begins)
    • Clear police records check
