Creative Arts, Interactive, Sound Programs

  • In this program, you learn a solid technical grounding and understanding of the conceptual framework of visual art is learned through a hands-on project-based curriculum. Visual literacy and problem-solving skills are emphasized through courses in drawing, design, colour study and the creative process. You explore a variety of the College’s studios: Ceramics, Digital Media, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Jewellery/Metal Arts, Photography and Textile Design. You create an individual portfolio that documents your course work and professional development. This enables you as a graduate to continue in the diploma programs at our College or at other leading institutions in Canada and beyond. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to integrate concepts and principles of art, craft and design through the creation of personal work. Duration The Foundation Visual Arts (FVA) Certificate is a 1-year program that offers you a wide-ranging overview of the practice, theory and history of the visual arts and is achieved over 2 semesters of study from September to April.
  • This program provides you with skill development in the traditional and contemporary crafts of the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqey and Passamaquoddy Peoples. You learn the Aboriginal history of the Atlantic Region and work 1-on-1 with Aboriginal artists. You gain hands-on experience via a project-based curriculum with an entrepreneurial focus. Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing and 2D/3D design. You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your artistic career. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create a personal body of work representing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy. Duration Aboriginal Visual Arts is a 2-year Diploma program and is unique within Canadian higher education due to its emphasis on the traditional Aboriginal learning of the Wabanaki Territory of the Atlantic Region and is achieved over 6 semesters of study from September to June.
  • In this program, you explore clay, glazes and firing methods through working with low and high-fire materials and using gas and electric kilns. The program focuses primarily on studio production, critical discourse and self-reflection yet also permits ample time for experimentation including 3D computer-assisted design. As you progress, you learn to create clay bodies, calculate glazes using computer software and make plaster molds. In addition, you experiment with functional and sculptural forms while developing a personal aesthetic. Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing and 2D/3D design. You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your career in ceramics. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create a personal body of work representing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy. Most students start with taking our Foundation Visual Arts Program (see Apply Now). If you already have a certificate in visual arts, have previous post-secondary experience or in the visual arts, you might be eligible for direct entry into this diploma program. Duration This 2-year studio-based diploma program introduces you to a full range of ceramic practices and can be achieved in 6 semesters of study from September to June.
  • In this program, you learn the basics of sewing, pattern development and garment construction. These skills prepare you for more advanced studies in corset construction, finishing techniques, tailoring and draping. Fashion illustration and history, gives you inspiration to create your own fashion line to be presented at the annual public fashion show. Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing and 2D/3D design. You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your fashion career. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create a personal body of work representing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy. Duration The Diploma in Fashion Design is a 2-year studio-based program that gives you the opportunity to develop technical expertise in fashion design and an expressive, personal sense of design. achieved in 6 semesters of study from September to June.
  • In this program, you explore all aspects of visual communication including typographic design, brand identities and print and digital production with an entrepreneurial focus. It emphasizes the creation of visual content where you use specific techniques to transform content into posters, brochures, folders, catalogues and books.

    Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about the written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing and 2D/3D design. You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your career.

    By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create multi-literate modes of communication utilizing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy.

    Duration

    The Diploma in Graphic Design is a 2-year program that provides you with an in-depth knowledge of graphic design theory, professional techniques and industry standards and is achieved in 6 semesters of study from September to June.

    Most students start with taking our Foundation Visual Arts Program (see Apply Now). If you already have a certificate in visual arts, have previous post-secondary experience or in the visual arts, you might be eligible for direct entry into this diploma program.

  • This program provides intensive skill development by introducing you to sawing, filing, soldering, riveting and stone-setting. You use computer-assisted design, mould-making and casting technologies to experiment in making multiple designs. Through advanced processes such as complex construction, forging and silversmithing, you establish an individual artistic practice. Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing and 2D/3D design. You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your career. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create a personal body of work representing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity, and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy. Duration Jewellery/Metal Arts is 2-year studio-based diploma program that enables you to learn skills that transform metal into functional and non-functional objects and can be completed in 4 semesters of study from September to April.
  • This program reinforces creative exploration through developing studio skills and learning relevant software. You learn to use natural and artificial lighting and image manipulation techniques to produce photographs to a professional standard. In addition, you develop technical and aesthetic photographic skills and are provided the foundation for generating truly creative and individual imagery. Through applied research, critical discourse and self reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing and 2D/3D design.  You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your careers. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create a personal body of work representing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy. Duration Photography is a 2-year, studio-based diploma program that emphasizes the exciting range of digital photographic technologies in state-of-the-art facilities and can be achieved in 6 semesters of study from September to June.
  • In this program, you are provided with a solid theoretical and a practical foundation in textile arts. It gives you the opportunity to specialize in professional disciplines including machine knitting, surface print design (for printed textiles and other end products) and weaving. Computer-assisted design is combined with a hands-on approach giving a creative and practical education in textile design that fits the needs of industry, freelance work as well as contemporary studio practice. Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing, and 2D/3D design. You create a portfolio that celebrates the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your career. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to create a personal body of work representing technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity and cultural awareness, and have the capacity to work within the creative economy. Duration Textile Design is a 2-year studio-based diploma program exploring a range of traditional and non-traditional techniques and is achieved in 6 semesters of study from September to June. 
  • Advanced Studio Practice
    This post-diploma certificate program spans three semesters of study in which you develop and implement a professional career plan in the visual arts. The program takes a whole person approach by empowering you to manifest your career goals while awakening your personal and human potential. The key focus is on studio practice in your area of concentration while you work collaboratively with celebrated faculty advisers and professional mentors. This program is suitable for recent graduates, professional artists and individuals with an artistic practice who wish to engage in a creative, collegial environment while evolving your distinct career goals. By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to develop and implement a personal and professional career plan while fully engaged in studio practice. Portfolio Requirements Duration In this 1-year certificate program, you develop and implement a professional career plan in the visual arts over 3 semesters of study, September to June.

Technology, Networking Programs

  • In the first 2 terms of this program, you are introduced to the latest digital technologies and provided with a foundation in design concepts. In the 3rd term, you further develop your skills in the areas of 3D virtual reality and audio/video. In 3D VR, you create 3D models, animations and virtual reality environments for use in computer games, training and simulations. In the audio/video courses, you create productions that are ready to broadcast or stream online. Through applied research, critical discourse and self-reflection, you engage in experimentation and creative problem solving. You learn about written and visual communications for artists and entrepreneurs, art history, drawing, and 2D/3D design. Assignments are designed to create a portfolio that celebrate the power of your imagination and can be used to launch your career.  By the end of this program, you will have demonstrated the ability to creatively use the technical skills necessary to work within the field of digital media. Duration In this 2-year, laptop based program, you will learn to produce professional-level digital media projects in 6 semesters of study from September to June.
