Skilled Trades, Auto, Fire Programs

  • The Automotive Technician process requires time spent on the job and in-school training. An Automotive Technician trainee must complete a four-year program including 6,360 workplace hours and 840 in-school hours of training. After completion of training, a passing grade on inter-provincial exams will result in the BC Certificate of Apprenticeship and the Certificate of Qualification, with Red Seal Inter-provincial Certification.

    The program

    The classroom program will include courses in electrical systems, air conditioning systems, fuel systems, driveline, engine mechanical, power train, steering and suspension, brakes, options and accessories, computer operated/assisted systems, truck components and systems and body and trim.

    Harmonized automotive technician apprenticeship

    Harmonized apprentice levels will be regularly scheduled as follows:

    • Level 1 intakes offered after September 1, 2017
    • Level 2 intakes offered after September 1, 2017
    • Level 3 intakes offered after September 1, 2018
    • Level 4 intakes offered after September 1, 2019

    The following apprentices will be required to complete their levels of training in the harmonized program:

    • New Level 1 Automotive Technician apprentices
    • All apprentices, including foundation graduates, transitioning to Level 2 after September 1, 2017

    Transitioning to harmonized Level 2

    Apprentices that need to transition to the harmonized program will be required to complete self-study. Additional training is required to address the gaps in program content as follows:

    • Transitioning from Level 1 or Foundation to harmonized Level 2 requires self-directed study prior to entering harmonized Level 3.
