• Construction/Industrial Electrician (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 9-month Construction/Industrial Electrician (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a certified first-year apprentice in either the construction or industrial sector. Some of the course you will do include safety, single- and three-phase theory, blueprint reading, conduit, tubing and fittings, wiring, fire alarms and security systems, transformers, single phase service entrance, heating systems and many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our electrical shops.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Construction/Industrial Electrician (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. Passing this examination will result in receiving Red Seal Certification.  
• Insulator (Heat and Frost) (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 18 week Insulator (Heat and Frost) (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, insulation principles, materials and practices, hot work, asbestos removal, blueprint reading, pipe and piping systems, as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and insulator shop.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Insulator (Heat and Frost) (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. Passing this examination will result in receiving Red Seal Certification.
• Occupational Health and Safety

  Program Description

  Academy Canada’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program responds to the growing demand for employees in the area of health and safety. Graduates will be able to: interpret OHS legislation, develop OHS/Loss-Control Programs, conduct audits and inspections of existing OHS and environmental programs, and design and deliver effective OHS training programs for workers. The OHS Program meets the formal education requirements for certification with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP). There are other criteria graduates must meet to become eligible to register for BCRSP certification; your admissions officer can provide more information on this topic. OHS graduates will also complete training that meets the requirements of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association (NLCSA) for auditor certification training.
• Plumber (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 34 week Plumber (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, blueprint reading, rigging, piping (including steel, copper, plastic and brass), heating systems, water treatment systems, waste disposal systems and fuel brazing/cutting as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our professional plumbing shops.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Plumber (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. Passing this examination will result in receiving Red Seal Certification.
• Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics (RACM) install, maintain, repair and overhaul residential central air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems. In addition to installation and repair, main duties may include blueprint reading and interpretation, troubleshooting, leak testing, and preparing estimates for clients. • Sheet Metal Worker (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 34 week Sheet Metal Worker (Pre-Employment) Diploma is an apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice. Sheet Metal Workers fabricate, assemble, install and repair sheet metal products (Source: National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2016).
• Steamfitter/Pipefitter (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The Steamfitter/Pipefitter (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, blueprint reading, piping and tubing fundamentals, piping (including copper, plastic, brass), piping valves, low pressure steam, heating systems, pipe layout/fitting fabrication and pipe template development as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our three Steamfitter/Pipefitter shops.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Steamfitter/Pipefitter (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. • Welder (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 34 week Welder (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, blueprint reading, plasma arc cutting/gouging, fuel brazing, shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, flux-cored arc welding and fabrication as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and Welding shop. Upon successful completion of academic courses students will also take part in a 2 week work-term before graduating.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Welder (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. • Auto Body and Collision Technician (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The Auto Body and Collision Technician (Pre-Employment) program is a provincially accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. Auto Body and Collision Technicians repair and restore damaged motor vehicle body parts and interior finishing; repaint body surfaces; and repair and/or replace automotive glass. This  group also includes metal repairers who repair defective automobile body parts and damage to the bodies of newly assembled cars.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Auto Body and Collision Technician (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. Passing this examination will result in receiving Red Seal Certification.
• Automotive Service Technician (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 9-month Automotive Service Technician (Pre-Employment) Diploma is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to: safety, engine systems, electrical, steering, braking systems, suspension, body components, trim, restraint systems, hybrid/alternative fuel systems and many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and automotive shop.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Automotive Service Technician (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. • Carpenter (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 9-month Carpenter (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, blueprint reading, estimating, layouts and footings, interior/exterior finish, stairs, floor and wall finishes and many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and carpentry shop.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Carpenter (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. • Greenhouse Production

  Program Description

  Greenhouse Production is Academy Canada’s newest diploma program. Designed to prepare graduates for exciting careers in a range of occupations, it will teach students about crop production, nursery management, the physical plant environment and pest control. Courses will also focus on labour management, plant science and given legalization, will include regulations related to the cannabis industry. Skills acquired will be essential to work in the horticulture and agricultural industries. With the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council predicting skilled labour shortages across the entire agricultural, greenhouse, nursery and floriculture industries until 2025, we are confident that this program will provide graduates with a wide range of skills to meet the needs of employers throughout the province.

• Natural Resources

  Program Description

  The two year Natural Resources Academy Canada diploma program will prepare students to work in the exciting fields of wildlife, forestry, fisheries, enforcement and environmental consulting. Besides the numerous courses related to animal behaviour, silviculture, ecology and fish management, students will complete several professional development courses. They include canoeing, coastal navigation, firearms safety, and first aid as well as a one-week field camp. At the end of the program, academic and practical training is supplemented with an 8 week work term.

Culinary Arts Programs

• Cook (Pre-Employment)

  Program Description

  The 9-month Cook (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety and hygiene, vegetables, meats, fruits and nuts, rices and grains, seafood and deserts as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our professional kitchens. After completing the academic portion of the program students will complete a 2 week work-term under the supervision of a professional cook.

  Apprenticeship Training

  The Cook (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. • Baker (Entry)

  Program Description

  The 9-month Baker (Entry) Diploma program designed to provide the practical training necessary for graduates to obtain rewarding and immediate employment as a Baker in hotels and restaurants as well as large and small bakeries. Students will spend considerable time working in the kitchen making such delicious creations as breads and rolls, biscuits, specialty cakes, donuts and cookies, puff pastries and desserts as well as much more. Academic studies are then supplemented by a 2 week work-term with a professional baker.

• Computer Aided Drafting

  Program Description

  Academy Canada’s Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) program is designed to provide students with the essential foundation of skills, knowledge and abilities required for computer-aided design, drafting and modeling in two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) project environments. These skills are in high demand, and will prepare graduates for rewarding careers in a wide range of industries, such as civil, construction, mechanical, and naval architectural fields.

  Program Description

There is a regional and national skills shortage in the Information Technology Industry and demand for IT professionals is expected to increase. Employers are looking for a unique combination of both technical skills and business skills in IT professionals, so they can be team players who can find business solutions that are rooted in technology. Over the past decade, one of the clearest trends has been a significant increase in the proportion of jobs that require the skills package, rather than just core technical skills. – Source: Information and Communications Technology Council Academy Canada’s IT Network Professional Program is geared towards producing flexible network administrators that can respond to the varied needs of industry. Graduates will be able to assist end users in day to day business operations, including recognizing and resolving security threats to networks, backing up server information to avoid data loss and performing disaster recovery operations. Graduates will also be able to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to help businesses operate efficiently through the use of technology. The IT Network Professional Program prepares graduates to seek certification in a variety of technology and business areas including those with Microsoft, Cisco, Project Management and CompTIA. Certification examinations are optional, and are administered independently from any school or campus at the student’s expense. Experience is built into the program as students apply their skills to solving real-life business problems and the work term component allows students to refine their skills in the work environment. • Criminology

  Program Description

  The Criminology program exposes students to the nature and causes of crime, criminal behaviour, and the criminal justice system. Students will receive training in specialized areas of psychology and sociology, as well as experience in standard security practices so that valuable assistance may be provided to counselors and corrections staff. The goal of the program is to develop the skills in a graduate who will be well versed in the current philosophy of corrections on the provincial and national scenes.
• Law Enforcement Foundations

  Program Description

  The Law Enforcement Foundations program prepares students for a career in justice and related systems. The program emphasizes the humanistic and preventative side of law enforcement and security administration. Students will study public and private policing, institutional security, security management, security systems, corrections, forensics, computer applications, and applied psychology. In addition, students will study the Canadian legal system, trial procedures, and criminal deviant behaviour.
• Paralegal Studies

  Program Description

  The Paralegal Studies program prepares graduates to work as support staff within the legal profession. Students will acquire an understanding of general principles of Canadian law and receive theoretical and practical training in specific legal subjects, legal ethics, and small business requirements. Under the supervision of a professional lawyer, students will learn to interview clients, conduct legal research, prepare documents, and help legal professionals prepare for trials. A high level of skills, ability to effectively organize, and manage a variety of tasks simultaneously are essential for persons interested in this demanding field.

• Business Administration

  Program Description

  The Business Administration (Marketing, Human Relations, Accounting) program prepares students for a career in numerous interesting and exciting professional disciplines. Graduates will develop the practical skills needed to compete as leaders within the business world. They will develop business plans, create marketing plans, learn the techniques required to manage complex accounting systems and formulate effective public relations strategies. Human relations courses will prepare students to manage employees and get the very best from them. This program is designed to build the well-rounded business professionals needed in Newfoundland and Labrador, across Canada and internationally.
• Office Administration – Skills Upgrading

  Program Description

  Designed for professionals with a minimum of two years combined training and experience in the office administration field, this series of four Skills Upgrading Certificate/Diploma programs provides students with specialized skills related to a particular work environment. Students may complete one or more programs in order to build up their credentials for jobs within engineering or legal firms, medical clinics/hospitals, and dental offices.
• Office Administration (General Studies)

  Program Description

  The Office Administration (General Studies) program prepares students to have a working knowledge of any modern office setting. The ability to communicate both orally and in written form gives a graduate the edge in this competitive field. This program prepares students to work in the most current application packages. These, along with the introduction to accounting software, offers any student the training to become a successful office assistant.
• Office Administration Technology (Medical, Dental, Legal, Engineering, Records Management)

  Program Description

  The two-year Office Administration Technology program is designed to give graduates the greatest possible employability within the administration field. During year one, students gain a thorough understanding of the skills required to work in the field with courses in Keyboarding, Transcription, Accounting, Computers, and Communications, amongst others. In year two, students will focus on five areas of specialization that will prepare them for positions within the highly technical fields of Medical, Dental, Legal, Engineering, and Records Management administration. It is in year two that we have placed the new in-depth study of Records and Information Management which is so important to all of these technical fields. Students will have the opportunity to plan, supervise, and produce work in consultation with numerous community groups and local area businesses. This program also has a 4-week work term to help students gain additional real-world experience and build a strong network.

Travel, Tourism, Hospitality Programs

• Travel, Tourism and Hospitality

  Program Description

  The Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality program will immerse students into one of the most dynamic fast-paced industries on the globe. This CITC (Canadian Institute of Travel Counselors) endorsed program prepares students to work in various sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Students prepare to become professional travel counsellors while being exposed to tourist activities and opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry. The program provides exposure to all aspects of the industry including reservations, hotels, bed and breakfasts, marketing, etc. Students will participate in the CITC Knowledge Exam to begin the process of industry recognition early in their career. This industry standard examination is separate from course examinations required for the Diploma of Applied Arts from Academy Canada.

Creative Arts, Interactive, Sound Programs

• Photographic Studies

  Program Description

  The Photographic Studies program provides students with comprehensive training in all elements of still photography. Students will learn the creative and technical skills needed to take artistic photographs and portraits as well as the business background required to work in the photography industry. In addition to formal training, students also have the opportunity to experience real-world aspects of being a photographer by servicing a client base during Academy Canada’s client days. Client days provide students with the chance to work with a client base on such things as intermediate portrait techniques, background coordination, basic posing techniques, glamour photography, and studio propping. The program also allows for frequent field trips and potential sales of scenic and portrait photography.
• Interior Decorating

  Program Description

  The Interior Decorating program is designed specifically for individuals with a flair for creativity, imagination and design. It prepares graduates to work in a wide range of professional service and sales-oriented environments as well as for self-employment. Students will study the effective use of color, fabrics, lighting, furniture, window treatments, antiques and much more in order to functionally and attractively decorate residential, commercial and public spaces. Courses in drawing, computers, retailing, marketing and entrepreneurship round out this exciting program and prepare participants to become adaptable employees or business owners. When the academics are done, you’ll tie it all together with an 8 week work-term, mentored by an industry professional.
• Multimedia Graphic Design

  Program Description

  The Multimedia Graphic Design program prepares students to work with solid design concepts. Students take their ideas into full production using industry-standard software like the Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere). Multimedia is the next step for the graphic design industry. This program brings together “all media” into one format. Multimedia allows the student to create the interactive visuals essential in today’s digital advertising. Students create a wide range of materials, including webpages, social media graphics and video, that showcase their creativity and ability to communicate with impact. All graduates in the program complete a portfolio showcasing their talents and abilities to enhance student training and employability.
• Music and Recording Arts

  Program Description

  The Music and Recording Arts program is designed to provide students with the technological and creative skills needed for success in today’s digital-based music industry. The heightened expertise and artistry of members of the music industry within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has led to an increasing demand for recording artists. In the past, many recording artists have had to leave the province to record their work; Newfoundland Labrador is now ready to meet the demands of its artists for top quality recording. Working primarily on the Macintosh platform, students will learn industry standard music software for audio recording and processing. Practical applications include: studio design and acoustics, microphone placement, signal flow, I/O connections, hardware- and software-based effects, dynamics processing, as well as mixing and mastering. Students will also learn to create advertisements for radio broadcast and video/audio synchronization. The program also includes courses in music theory, song-writing, and arranging. Students will gain hands-on studio experience and develop portfolios by engineering and producing each other’s projects.

Human & Social Services, CSW Programs

• Developmental Support Worker

  Program Description

  Academy Canada’s Developmental Support Worker program will prepare students to work in environments that can include government organizations, educational facilities, mental health agencies and other institutions that assist persons with physical, behavioral, cognitive, and/or psychological disabilities in order to enhance inclusion of persons with special needs in all aspects of society. It is designed to train the student to recognize both the needs and abilities of persons they are supporting. Students will develop the skills and attitudes necessary to assist children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities to achieve their goals and demonstrate their potential as contributing members of our community.

Beauty, Esthetics, Barber Programs

• Esthetics and Spa Management with Electrolysis

  Program Description

  The National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) has developed an Esthetics program that addresses national standards in the field. Academy Canada has incorporated the NACC curriculum in the Esthetics and Spa Management program to ensure that students are trained to meet established learning outcomes and program standards. The program also features the latest in spa treatments and spa customer services and sales. The esthetics profession is one of the fastest growing personal service industries in North America today. The esthetics professional trains and provides personal services in many areas including skin care, nutrition, nail art and design, aromatherapy, pedicures and body sugaring which help clients of all ages look and feel good about themselves. It is a highly personal service and an exciting, rewarding career because of the variety of services given to clients during a typical day. Estheticians provide clients with an opportunity to enhance their total physical and emotional care that is so important in today’s high stress society. Other related training includes: Salon Business Management, Business Communications, Selling of Products and Services, and Employment Portfolio. The Esthetics and Spa Management with Electrolysis program is also designed to provide the esthetician with enhanced hair removal processes through the use of electrolysis. It will provide the student with a complete and comprehensive understanding of the biological causes of unwanted hair growth. The student will be able to make a practical analysis of the type of hair and skin which will help to identify various disorders that may cause hair growth and in turn determine the strategy for treatment to offer the client. The student will also cover all aspects of recent changes and advances in training and technology. They will have the opportunity to understand and perform electrolysis, thermolysis, and the blend methods of permanently removing hair from both women and men as well as be trained in all aspects of starting and operating an electrolysis clinic. Students may choose to not do the Electrolysis component and graduate one semester earlier.
• Hairstylist (Entry)

  Program Description

  The 39 week Hairstylist (Entry) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship curriculum that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, salon fundamentals, cutting and styling, hair color, chemical waving and relaxing hairstyles and many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and hair salon. Upon successful completion of academic courses students will also take part in a 3 week work-term before graduating.

  The Hairstylist (Entry) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become an Entry-Level Hairstylist. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. Passing this examination will result in receiving Red Seal Certification.

  The Nail Technician program will initiate students into one of the most fascinating industries in the country. People with a sense of creativity, visual perception, good human relations, and communications skills will be attracted to this occupation. Students develop nail technician skills in the classroom and a simulated salon setting. The Nail Technician program provides exposure to many aspects of the industry including sterilization and sanitation, manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, acrylic nails, gel nails, wraps (fibreglass), nail art, manicures, pedicures and the use of the electric file.

• Massage Therapy

  Program Description

  The Massage Therapy program, developed by Medix School in Ontario, will prepare graduates to work in one of the fastest growing health professions in Canada. This field has been growing rapidly as a result of a healthcare system that promotes individual well-being. In addition, there is an increasing trend for practitioners to see massage therapy as an important rehabilitation tool for clients. This training takes place over 8 blocks with considerable hands-on practice under faculty supervision. The profession of massage therapy is regulated within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In order to practice as a Massage Therapist in the province, one must successfully complete the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMTNL) certification examination. Graduates of Academy Canada’s Massage Therapy diploma program are eligible to write the CMTNL certification examination. The purpose of the CMTNL is to set and enforce standards respecting massage therapy in the public interest. The CMTNL establishes standards for massage therapy practice and administers examinations to ensure that entry level competency standards are met. Upon successful completion of Academy Canada’s massage therapy program, graduates can take the next step with the CMTNL certification examination. • Massage Therapy OSCE and MCQ Preparation

  Program Description

  The profession of massage therapy is regulated within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In order to practice as a Massage Therapist in the province, one must successfully complete the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMTNL) certification examination. The Massage Therapy – OSCE and MCQ Preparation program is designed specifically as a refresher program for those individuals who need a second diploma in order to be able to write the CMTNL certification again, or for those whose license has been inactive for two or more consecutive years. The CMTNL has confirmed that the diploma obtained following completion of this program meets the requirements of both Sections 8(3) and 9(4) of the Massage Therapy Board Regulations.
• Medical Device Reprocessing

  A Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) Technician is a medical professional who cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, prepares, and distributes instruments/equipment including endoscopes in a hospital or medical lab. • Physiotherapy Assistant

  Program Description

  PTAs are trained personnel who assist in the provision of physiotherapy services under the direction and supervision of a registered/licensed physiotherapist. The role of the PTA is to assist the physiotherapist in ensuring that physiotherapy services are delivered in a safe, effective and efficient manner. PTAs help provide physiotherapy services that achieve and maintain optimal client outcomes. Physiotherapy practice is dynamic, as is the relationship between the physiotherapist and the PTA. The type of supervision and the type of tasks assigned are determined by the supervising physiotherapist in accordance with provincial physiotherapy regulations. Source Physiotherapy Assistants duties may include clerical responsibilities plus direct or indirect patient care. The PTA program will expose students to physiotherapy fundamentals including human anatomy, physiology, therapeutic exercise including basic patient care regarding functional movement and rehabilitation. In addition, physiotherapy therapeutic techniques will be addressed pertaining to the musculoskeletal system, modalities, physical agents, cardiac, neurological and respiratory systems. Students will enhance their skills during a work term under the guidance of a Physiotherapist.   Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Profession) is about creating purpose and meaning in people’s lives! It’s about getting to know who a person really is so you can understand what brings true enjoyment to their life and then getting them involved in activities that mean something to them. Leisure and recreation are essential parts of a healthy life. Research has clearly shown that physical activity, stress reduction, mental stimulation and friendships are necessary to good health. Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Profession) focuses on using recreation experiences to assist people with disabilities, chronic conditions and/or illnesses to overcome barriers that prevent them from achieving a fulfilling quality of life. For the older person in a long-term care facility, recreation activities provide them with the social and physical stimulation that are essential in maintaining physical, mental and emotional well-being. This program will give students a broad knowledge of topics such as aging and chronic illnesses, mental illness and addictions, and issues/challenges with respect to living with a disability. As a student, you will learn about the importance of leisure and how it promotes self-esteem, independence and satisfaction in a person’s life. Students will be equipped with the tools to apply the therapeutic recreation process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to empower their clients to set goals for their leisure and recreation and get involved in their community. The majority of courses comprising the Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Profession) program were developed and are copyrighted by Douglas College in New Westminster, BC. As a result of our license agreement with Douglas College, upon completion of their two-year program, graduates may choose to apply for transfer of up to 60 credits towards the Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation degree program at Douglas College.

  Program Description

  Have you always dreamed of a career working with and caring for animals? Academy Canada’s two semester Animal Grooming Professional program may be right for you. This hands-on program will teach students the technical skills needed to either gain employment with an existing company or to start their own business. The program focuses on animal behaviour and dog/cat grooming strategies as well as client relations. Given the nature of working closely with animals from the beginning of the program onward, students are strongly recommended to get their tetanus immunization at their earliest convenience, no later than the end of the first term.

  Program Description

  The Veterinary Assistant / Receptionist program prepares students for a career in the field of animal care. Students will receive hands-on training that will enable them to assist the veterinarian in day-to-day clinical procedures that may include: anesthesia monitoring, preparing for surgeries, surgery assisting, administering medications, taking X-Rays, and counseling clients on training methods. This program also prepares students to effectively perform administrative and reception duties.
