Program Description
The 9-month Construction/Industrial Electrician (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a certified first-year apprentice in either the construction or industrial sector. Some of the course you will do include safety, single- and three-phase theory, blueprint reading, conduit, tubing and fittings, wiring, fire alarms and security systems, transformers, single phase service entrance, heating systems and many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our electrical shops.

- Occupational Health and Safety
Program Description
Academy Canada’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program responds to the growing demand for employees in the area of health and safety. Graduates will be able to: interpret OHS legislation, develop OHS/Loss-Control Programs, conduct audits and inspections of existing OHS and environmental programs, and design and deliver effective OHS training programs for workers.
The OHS Program meets the formal education requirements for certification with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP). There are other criteria graduates must meet to become eligible to register for BCRSP certification; your admissions officer can provide more information on this topic. OHS graduates will also complete training that meets the requirements of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association (NLCSA) for auditor certification training.

Program Description
The 34 week Plumber (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, blueprint reading, rigging, piping (including steel, copper, plastic and brass), heating systems, water treatment systems, waste disposal systems and fuel brazing/cutting as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our professional plumbing shops.
Apprenticeship Training
The Plumber (Pre-Employment) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become a first-year apprentice. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. Government will then cover the costs associated with regular advanced training as the apprentice gains experience and works towards completing their Journeyperson exam. Passing this examination will result in receiving Red Seal Certification.
- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (Pre-Employment)
Program Description
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics (RACM) install, maintain, repair and overhaul residential central air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems. In addition to installation and repair, main duties may include blueprint reading and interpretation, troubleshooting, leak testing, and preparing estimates for clients.

- Steamfitter/Pipefitter (Pre-Employment)
Program Description
The Steamfitter/Pipefitter (Pre-Employment) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, blueprint reading, piping and tubing fundamentals, piping (including copper, plastic, brass), piping valves, low pressure steam, heating systems, pipe layout/fitting fabrication and pipe template development as well as many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and one of our three Steamfitter/Pipefitter shops.

The Auto Body and Collision Technician (Pre-Employment) program is a provincially accredited apprenticeship program that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. Auto Body and Collision Technicians repair and restore damaged motor vehicle body parts and interior finishing; repaint body surfaces; and repair and/or replace automotive glass. This group also includes metal repairers who repair defective automobile body parts and damage to the bodies of newly assembled cars.

- Greenhouse Production
Program Description
Greenhouse Production is Academy Canada’s newest diploma program. Designed to prepare graduates for exciting careers in a range of occupations, it will teach students about crop production, nursery management, the physical plant environment and pest control. Courses will also focus on labour management, plant science and given legalization, will include regulations related to the cannabis industry. Skills acquired will be essential to work in the horticulture and agricultural industries.
With the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council predicting skilled labour shortages across the entire agricultural, greenhouse, nursery and floriculture industries until 2025, we are confident that this program will provide graduates with a wide range of skills to meet the needs of employers throughout the province.

Program Description
The two year Natural Resources Academy Canada diploma program will prepare students to work in the exciting fields of wildlife, forestry, fisheries, enforcement and environmental consulting. - Office Administration Technology (Medical, Dental, Legal, Engineering, Records Management)
Program Description
The two-year Office Administration Technology program is designed to give graduates the greatest possible employability within the administration field. During year one, students gain a thorough understanding of the skills required to work in the field with courses in Keyboarding, Transcription, Accounting, Computers, and Communications, amongst others. In year two, students will focus on five areas of specialization that will prepare them for positions within the highly technical fields of Medical, Dental, Legal, Engineering, and Records Management administration. It is in year two that we have placed the new in-depth study of Records and Information Management which is so important to all of these technical fields. Students will have the opportunity to plan, supervise, and produce work in consultation with numerous community groups and local area businesses. - Photographic Studies
Program Description
The Photographic Studies program provides students with comprehensive training in all elements of still photography. Students will learn the creative and technical skills needed to take artistic photographs and portraits as well as the business background required to work in the photography industry. In addition to formal training, students also have the opportunity to experience real-world aspects of being a photographer by servicing a client base during Academy Canada’s client days. Client days provide students with the chance to work with a client base on such things as intermediate portrait techniques, background coordination, basic posing techniques, glamour photography, and studio propping. The Interior Decorating program is designed specifically for individuals with a flair for creativity, imagination and design. - Music and Recording Arts
Program Description
The Music and Recording Arts program is designed to provide students with the technological and creative skills needed for success in today’s digital-based music industry. The heightened expertise and artistry of members of the music industry within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has led to an increasing demand for recording artists. In the past, many recording artists have had to leave the province to record their work; Newfoundland Labrador is now ready to meet the demands of its artists for top quality recording.
Working primarily on the Macintosh platform, students will learn industry standard music software for audio recording and processing. Practical applications include: studio design and acoustics, microphone placement, signal flow, I/O connections, hardware- and software-based effects, dynamics processing, as well as mixing and mastering. Students will also learn to create advertisements for radio broadcast and video/audio synchronization. The program also includes courses in music theory, song-writing, and arranging. Students will gain hands-on studio experience and develop portfolios by engineering and producing each other’s projects.
- Esthetics and Spa Management with Electrolysis

The National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) has developed an Esthetics program that addresses national standards in the field. Academy Canada has incorporated the NACC curriculum in the Esthetics and Spa Management program to ensure that students are trained to meet established learning outcomes and program standards. The program also features the latest in spa treatments and spa customer services and sales. The esthetics profession is one of the fastest growing personal service industries in North America today. The esthetics professional trains and provides personal services in many areas including skin care, nutrition, nail art and design, aromatherapy, pedicures and body sugaring which help clients of all ages look and feel good about themselves. It is a highly personal service and an exciting, rewarding career because of the variety of services given to clients during a typical day. Estheticians provide clients with an opportunity to enhance their total physical and emotional care that is so important in today’s high stress society. Other related training includes: Salon Business Management, Business Communications, Selling of Products and Services, and Employment Portfolio.
The Esthetics and Spa Management with Electrolysis program is also designed to provide the esthetician with enhanced hair removal processes through the use of electrolysis. It will provide the student with a complete and comprehensive understanding of the biological causes of unwanted hair growth. The student will be able to make a practical analysis of the type of hair and skin which will help to identify various disorders that may cause hair growth and in turn determine the strategy for treatment to offer the client. The student will also cover all aspects of recent changes and advances in training and technology. They will have the opportunity to understand and perform electrolysis, thermolysis, and the blend methods of permanently removing hair from both women and men as well as be trained in all aspects of starting and operating an electrolysis clinic.
Students may choose to not do the Electrolysis component and graduate one semester earlier.

The 39 week Hairstylist (Entry) Diploma program is a provincially-accredited apprenticeship curriculum that was developed by government and approved by the Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board. The program provides students with a wide range of skills that are needed to work as a first-year apprentice, including those related to safety, salon fundamentals, cutting and styling, hair color, chemical waving and relaxing hairstyles and many others. Most courses are designed in such a way that students spend time divided equally between the classroom and hair salon. Upon successful completion of academic courses students will also take part in a 3 week work-term before graduating.

The Hairstylist (Entry) program is an apprenticeship trades program. Courses completed at Academy Canada meet the requirements to become an Entry-Level Hairstylist. Once this training is completed and the graduate obtains their first position in the trade, s/he must register as an Apprentice with the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour. - Nail Technician
Program Description
The Nail Technician program will initiate students into one of the most fascinating industries in the country. People with a sense of creativity, visual perception, good human relations, and communications skills will be attracted to this occupation. Students develop nail technician skills in the classroom and a simulated salon setting. The Nail Technician program provides exposure to many aspects of the industry including sterilization and sanitation, manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, acrylic nails, gel nails, wraps (fibreglass), nail art, manicures, pedicures and the use of the electric file.
- Massage Therapy
Program Description
The Massage Therapy program, developed by Medix School in Ontario, will prepare graduates to work in one of the fastest growing health professions in Canada. This field has been growing rapidly as a result of a healthcare system that promotes individual well-being. In addition, there is an increasing trend for practitioners to see massage therapy as an important rehabilitation tool for clients. This training takes place over 8 blocks with considerable hands-on practice under faculty supervision.
The profession of massage therapy is regulated within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In order to practice as a Massage Therapist in the province, one must successfully complete the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMTNL) certification examination. Graduates of Academy Canada’s Massage Therapy diploma program are eligible to write the CMTNL certification examination.
The purpose of the CMTNL is to set and enforce standards respecting massage therapy in the public interest. The CMTNL establishes standards for massage therapy practice and administers examinations to ensure that entry level competency standards are met.
Upon successful completion of Academy Canada’s massage therapy program, graduates can take the next step with the CMTNL certification examination. This third party examination is at the expense of the student. Please refer to the CMTNL website for exam details and links.
Massage Therapy graduates can also take advantage of Academy Canada’s Articulation Agreement with Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC which gives graduates advanced standing for 69 credits towards TRU’s Bachelor of Health Science degree.

- Massage Therapy OSCE and MCQ Preparation
Program Description
The profession of massage therapy is regulated within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In order to practice as a Massage Therapist in the province, one must successfully complete the College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMTNL) certification examination. The Massage Therapy – OSCE and MCQ Preparation program is designed specifically as a refresher program for those individuals who need a second diploma in order to be able to write the CMTNL certification again, or for those whose license has been inactive for two or more consecutive years. The CMTNL has confirmed that the diploma obtained following completion of this program meets the requirements of both Sections 8(3) and 9(4) of the Massage Therapy Board Regulations.
- Medical Device Reprocessing
Program Description
A Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) Technician is a medical professional who cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, prepares, and distributes instruments/equipment including endoscopes in a hospital or medical lab.
The MDR program will expose students to reprocessing fundamentals including: sterile concepts; decontamination procedures; instrumentation identification, care and handling; microbiology/infection control; sterile storage/inventory; and assembly, wrapping and packaging.

- Physiotherapy Assistant
Program Description
PTAs are trained personnel who assist in the provision of physiotherapy services under the direction and supervision of a registered/licensed physiotherapist. The role of the PTA is to assist the physiotherapist in ensuring that physiotherapy services are delivered in a safe, effective and efficient manner. PTAs help provide physiotherapy services that achieve and maintain optimal client outcomes.
Physiotherapy practice is dynamic, as is the relationship between the physiotherapist and the PTA. The type of supervision and the type of tasks assigned are determined by the supervising physiotherapist in accordance with provincial physiotherapy regulations. Source
Physiotherapy Assistants duties may include clerical responsibilities plus direct or indirect patient care. The PTA program will expose students to physiotherapy fundamentals including human anatomy, physiology, therapeutic exercise including basic patient care regarding functional movement and rehabilitation. In addition, physiotherapy therapeutic techniques will be addressed pertaining to the musculoskeletal system, modalities, physical agents, cardiac, neurological and respiratory systems. Students will enhance their skills during a work term under the guidance of a Physiotherapist.

Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Profession) is about creating purpose and meaning in people’s lives! Leisure and recreation are essential parts of a healthy life. Research has clearly shown that physical activity, stress reduction, mental stimulation and friendships are necessary to good health.
Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Profession) focuses on using recreation experiences to assist people with disabilities, chronic conditions and/or illnesses to overcome barriers that prevent them from achieving a fulfilling quality of life. For the older person in a long-term care facility, recreation activities provide them with the social and physical stimulation that are essential in maintaining physical, mental and emotional well-being. This program will give students a broad knowledge of topics such as aging and chronic illnesses, mental illness and addictions, and issues/challenges with respect to living with a disability. As a student, you will learn about the importance of leisure and how it promotes self-esteem, independence and satisfaction in a person’s life. Students will be equipped with the tools to apply the therapeutic recreation process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to empower their clients to set goals for their leisure and recreation and get involved in their community.
The majority of courses comprising the Therapeutic Recreation (Disability Support and Geriatric Profession) program were developed and are copyrighted by Douglas College in New Westminster, BC. As a result of our license agreement with Douglas College, upon completion of their two-year program, graduates may choose to apply for transfer of up to 60 credits towards the Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation degree program at Douglas College.
